1,1,2,2-Tetrachloroethane is used in the preparation of organic chemicals, as a solvent for fats, oils, waxes, resins, cellulose acetate and in certain types of Friedel-Crafts reactions. It is also used to make paints, varnishes, rust removers and other chlorinated hydrocarbons with two carbon atoms. It is utilized in the determination of theobromine in cacao. It is also used as an immersion fluid in crystallography. Further, it is used as an alcohol denaturant, fumigant, dry cleaning agent, in photographic film. In addition to this, it is used as an intermediate in the industrial production of trichloroethylene, tetrachloroethylene and1,2-dichloroethylene.

Aplicaciones
El 1,1,2,2-tetracloroetano se utiliza en la preparación de productos químicos orgánicos, como disolvente para grasas, aceites, ceras, resinas, acetato de celulosa y en ciertos tipos de reacciones de Friedel-Crafts. También se usa para fabricar pinturas, barnices, productos para eliminar el óxido y otros hidrocarburos clorados con dos átomos de carbono. Se utiliza en la determinación de teobromina en cacao. También se emplea como líquido de inmersión en cristalografía. Además, se utiliza como desnaturalizador de alcohol, fumigante y agente de limpieza en seco en películas fotográficas. Asimismo, se usa como producto intermedio en la producción industrial de tricloroetileno, tetracloroetileno y 1,2-dicloroetileno.

Solubilidad
Miscible con agua, metanol, etanol, cloroformo y acetona.

Incompatible con agentes oxidantes fuertes, sodio, óxidos de sodio, bases fuertes, potasio, nitratos y disulfuro de 2,4-dinitrofenilo.
